GOVERNMENT
Bulgaria is a parliamentary republic based on the Constitution passed
by the Grand National Assembly in 1991. The parliament, called the
National Assembly, has one chamber with 240 seats. The head of state
is the President, who represents national unity and is elected for
a period of five years by a direct vote.
On a national level the executive power is exercised by the Council
of Ministers. It appoints regional governors for each of the nine
regions to implement governmental policy.
